Kate Smith Hour

(3 stars; 2 reviews)

For eight years (1937–45), The Kate Smith Hour was a leading radio variety show, offering comedy, music and drama with appearances by top personalities of films and theater. The nationwide audience was introduced to comedy by the show's resident comics, Abbott and Costello and Henny Youngman, while a series of sketches led to The Aldrich Family as a spin-off in 1940. She continued into the 1950s on the Mutual Broadcasting System, CBS, ABC, and NBC, doing both music and talk shows.

This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.

I'm always so amazed at the lack of understanding about what radio archive is about and how there is a even ANY criticism about shows that are posted. I have never heard the Kate Smith Hour, and likely this is the only place that I could find it. Thank you for posting it here and sharing what is available now. Hopefully some other volunteer will come across more of these shows. Just happy to be able to hear this much. Recording quality was good.

"hour" shows that are less than 1/2 hour in length

All 3 have obviously been butchered. I listened to the one with Al Jolson and it was almost entirely about a movie called "Swanee River". Abbott and Costello were named in the opening, but are never heard from. To add insult to injury, the show, as presented, was simply a dull, long ad for the film.
