These are the LITTLE Big Jon and Sparky Shows

(5 stars)

If some of you find these episodes not quite up to your memories of them, it’s likely because these are the simple, fifteen minute shows that aired on weekday afternoons, not the grand Saturday shows of an hour or two that were broadcast with the title _No School Today_ and which featured the Colonel Jupiter of the Unviverse Patrol (I still remember some of the gags, and they still seem funny), Gilhooley Mahoney and his Leprechaun Marching Band, the talking doll Twinkles (for the girls; LOTS of boys listened to this show with no trace of embarrassment) and the foundation of the show, children’s records, of which Little Orly (not Taitz) was a staple. Can’t seem to find those Saturday shows.

Best Kid's Show Ever

Actually the show was comprised of many segments. Perhaps you remember the Magic Spyglass where the boys competed with girls for the cleanest room (actually it was teaching math). My favorite was General Comet of the Universe Patrol fight evil doers Montorancy Clutchrider and Ivan Cruisingspeed. The main storyline used here couldn't be done on the fly in that Big Jon did all the voices including speeding up the tape to reach Sparky's high pitch. Although boys didn't like to admit they listened in, many many of us were there at 9AM every Saturday morning for No School Today!

Best Memories...

Dad and I would tune in this Radio show every Sat. morning. Radio in the 50's was a Primary source of entertainment you could use your imagination but mostly I got to spend time with My Dad - just the two of us their in the kitchen (the radios PLACE). I can still see my dad's face as we would laugh together throughout the program. It was a Great radio show and now that dad's gone, I am so thankful that I have Big John and little Sparky to look back on. Thanks for the loving memories archive.org.!.

Ah, memory!

I have to lay it right out for you. I remember hearing this show as a kid, mainly on the car radio, and really enjoying it. When I hear it now, it's obvious that the guy was just making it up as he went along. Or improvising, call it what you will. There are long intervals while he vamps, trying to figure out where to go next with the plot corner he's painted himself into. Still, worth it for fans.

It has been a long time

I use to listen to this program when I was a kid. It use to be on Sat. Mornings. I think 9 to 10:30 or 11:00. I always thought this was one great program, but as I listen to it today, there is sometning missing. Most likely my 60 odd years of memory. It just did not meet my expectations. I guess that is why it is wonderful being a kid. Enjoyed it anyway.

My Dad was in the USAF at Offutt AFB in Omaha NB; we lived on Main street of Plattsmouth NB; a Norman Rockwell Town; that I loved as a young boy. My Mom and I would tune in Big John and Sparky and both sing "the teddy bears picnic". God it was a wonderful time in my life; I was five....lol GREAT site!

Still on the air

Station KTRW (630 kc) in Spokane plays 'No School Today' every Saturday morning. I haven't listened to it regularly, but I'm pretty sure they run more than 12 episodes.
