Eleanor's Victory

Read by Eleanor Howard

(4.6 stars; 190 reviews)

Only 15-years-old, Eleanor Vane is very happy with her lot: educated in an expensive finishing school in Paris, the apple of her father's eye, and disposed to be kind. Of course there are things missing: she does not remember her mother who died when she was young. But at least she has her father... Until he unexpectedly dies. Now Eleanor is at the mercy of her half-siblings who were never in touch with her, and the rest of the world who would consider her an orphaned beggar. Sent to work as a lady's companion to an old friend of her late father's, Eleanor might, just might, be able to win a respectable place in society. This novel is also famous for being one of the first Victorian novels with a female detective. - Summary by Stav Nisser (18 hr 9 min)

Ripping tale of revenge

(5 stars)

Terrific story, well written and beautifully read. I was doubtful at first but once it hits it's stride it is thoroughly enjoyable. Like the best pre-modern fiction it's an experience of another world, so unlike our own and yet familiar.

Great reader

(5 stars)

All i can say I continued with the story for only reason of the reader as she read the book amazingly and kept my interest other than that I found the heroin character super selfish and annoying which continued for the 3/4 of the book but like I said continued with the story for the sake of the reader as most of this author's books it's easy to guess what the ending is or what is about to happen

interesting but much too long on deatails

(3.5 stars)

Kept wanting to hear some answers; but characters seemed oblivious to the obvious. It went way too long. Had far to much Repetitive & aggravating detailed dialogue (especially w characters who weren't very smart and very high strung-- babbling endlessly until I had to keep fast- forwarding it. Entertaining in its own way.

Good story worth to listen to but also a little long

(4 stars)

I was always eager to find out what would happen next, but sometimes the story would evolve reeeeally slowly, as there were too many long descriptions and monologues. The story is worth it, though, so hang in there! 😊

great Victorian melodrama with intricate plot

(4 stars)

The intricacy of the plot and the marvellous coincidences out-Dickens Dickens. Grand melodramatic stuff, and absorbing, with a reassuring message tacked on that the worryingly independent, brave, and angry heroine is actually suitably 'womanly' after all! An excellent reading, thank you.

An Excellent Victorian Romantic Melodrama

(5 stars)

Soft, sweet, bitter, visceral, brutal, persuasive, and yes, even somewhat melancholy, this Novel has it all. read by a LibriVox Volunteer with a wonderfully soft & soothing voice. I was enchanted by the entire experience.

(1 stars)

I agree with one reviewer that the reader was excellent the story however was what Victorians loved but in this day and age it never ceases to surprise me how much bad literature there was around this era.

Crime pays

(1 stars)

The moral of the story. I didn’t listen to the whole book but due to the length went straight to the denouement. It took a lot of effort to endure this really well-read tripe.
