Pollyanna

Read by Eleanor H. Porter

(4.8 stars; 59 reviews)

In a small town far out West, 11 year old Pollyanna loses her mother then her dad to disease. This book describes how the orphan is sent to be raised by her aunt who lives far away in the East of the country. Unfortunately her aunt does not want her but accepts her very reluctantly only out of 'duty' and sticks her into a tiny hot attic room so she will be 'out of the way'. What Aunt Polly does not know is that Pollyanna is bringing the game of being 'glad' that her father taught her and that her irrepressible happy attitude will transform not only that dull and miserable house, but an entire village before she is through.

spoiled by intrusive adverts

(2 stars)

An excellent reading by the Librivox.org volunteer, but spoiled by intrusive advertising for Scrawl or Scribe or some such service which I shall not name because they don't deserve it. The adverts were inserted into the actual recording, so played whether I was online or not, and repeated the same message over and over. That message appeared to be that the cost of free books was that sometimes we should buy books from their grimy little hands. Quite a cheek, I thought, when their whole business model appears to be based on appropriating these free readings by vilunteers and profiteering from them. If this practice of inserting adverts into these free recordings cintinues then I'll be looking for a different way to access them, and will be warning my friends off the Librivox app (which has nothing to do with librivox.org of course.)

delightful

I remember the movie and thought this Covid-19 stay at home would be a great time to actually “read” the book! I was so surprised how much more to the story there was. Phil the reader, did a fabulous job making the story come to life.

not the reader

says read by the author... it is not, nor could it be. that sucks though because the reader is unknown and now I wont listen because of inaccurate info in the app.

Enjoyed this reader!
