Prayers and Meditations
Samuel Johnson
Read by Steven Watson
The prayers and meditations of Samuel Johnson, published posthumously by George Strahan to whom Johnson had entrusted the manuscripts. Johnson had been writing these down for over forty years. They often show him at his most repentant, melancholy and fragile -- and the book was controversial because of it -- but they also show the goodness, sense and strength which has always characterised this great man. - Summary by Steven Watson (3 hr 36 min)

We are used to the Johnson that Boswelll created. This shows Samuel Johnson in his own words as he faces his Lord and saviour. I feel more kindly towards Johnson having heard this. Congratulations to the reader for his sensitive rendition of Johnson’s inner life.
Blame his physician

His doctor gave him opium and MERCURY! No wonder he sometimes questioned his sanity.
