Madelaine is the poor cousin of the aristocratic de Gramont family in France of the 1850’s. She is cherished by the beautiful young Bertha and secretly the beloved of the handsome Maurice, but she is barely tolerated by the haughty old countess. When her uncle’s scheming manages to cause a serious rift within the family, Madelaine finds she must rely on the skill of her “fairy fingers” and make her living as a seamstress. She winds up as the sought-after couturier “Mademoiselle Melanie” in Washington, D.C. and has an opportunity to help the now financially-imperiled de Gramonts. - Summary by Kelly S. Reviews

A beautiful story but be ready for long passages/details

(5 stars)

Amazing book. It was too dragged in the middle, but I liked all the details and minute descriptions. The ending was very satisfying, there were many funny scences as well. Comtesse de Gramont is insufferable with her stupid stubbornness, Madeleine, on the contrary, is an amazing independent and industrious character. Monsieur Dubois is another character who delighted me with his courage, fidelity and sincerity. Maurice, unfortunately, didn't impress me as much, even if he finally became a lawyer; an indecisive and weak young man. And thank you, Kelly, for such good reading!

I couldn't stay awake...

I tried to listen to this book three different times, but it couldn't hold my interest. The young heroines-to-be were so perfect and the designated villains so selfish and stupid withal... Meh...

I loved this book! Almost every chapter ends with a minor cliffhanger and at times I had to literally laugh out loud. Great effort on the part of the reader, great vocal characterisations. Thank you.

loved this book! The reader is amazing. Chapter 48 is quite hilarious, with the verbal duel between the haughty countess and the American nurse. :)

(3 stars)

An inspiring story of true love in spite of obstacles, if you can survive the tedious rants of the narcissistic great aunt.

A Romance in France & US

At times a little slow, and some chapters have tinny audio, still readers generally quite good.
