Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads

(4.5 stars; 4 reviews)

Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads was a British TV sitcom broadcast between 9 January 1973 and 9 April 1974 on BBC1. It was the colour sequel to the mid-1960s hit The Likely Lads.  It was created and written, as was its predecessor, by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais. There were 26 television episodes over two series, and a subsequent 45-minute Christmas special which aired on 24 December 1974. The cast was reunited in 1975 for a radio version of series 1, transmitted on BBC Radio 4 from July to October of that year.  The scripts were adapted for radio by John Browell.

1975 Radio Series

(3 stars)

The television scripts from series 1 of the colour show, which began in 1973 on tv, were adapted for radio in 1975 by the radio show's producer, John Browell. In the 1960s, the black-and-white tv episodes had been adapted for radio by James Bolam. It has to be said, Bolam did a better job than John Browell in preserving the tv show's humour. Much of the humour in the original had been visual. Also, Browell seemed frightened, in particular, by any jokes that involved swearing or that dealt with sex. The tv show had mild examples of both, but they were too much for Browell, who omitted them, and the 1975 radio series suffers accordingly.
