Mixed Bag

(2.5 stars)

This book consists of numerous short anecdotes about animals, most of which were followed by a brief moral. A number of anecdotes were touching stories about clever or caring animals. Others were amusing or surprising examples of animal behaviour. But there were also many anecdotes that ended with a dead animal. It gives a shock to the system to read a touching story, only to have it come to an abrupt end with that animal's death. I also didn't appreciate the little morals. They were unnecessary and tedious. Many thanks to the reader!

Reflection of the Times

(3 stars)

The stories are interesting but they clearly reflect a sensibility of the the author's time and ethnocentricity. A number of the stories demonstrate a Christian and European bias Also, these stories were aimed at young audiences,it is remarkable how many times the author elected to use overly complicated and archaic terms. Good historical piece thanks for recording them
