(4.4 stars; 13 reviews)

It is 1915 and Nelly and Lieutenant George Sarratt have recently married. After a blissful but brief honeymoon in the Lake District, George is posted to the Front in northern France. Nelly stays on in the Lake District with her older and controlling sister, Bridget. They meet some well to do people, including Sir William Farrell, his friend Captain Marsworth and his sister, Cicely.
News comes from France that George is ‘missing, believe killed’ in action. The story continues, exploring the fortunes and changing relationships of these people as the war drags on and there is no definite news of George’s fate.

Immensely Beautiful Story

(5 stars)

Thank you to Simon Evers for bringing this relatively unknown work to light. It’s an interesting thought that Mrs. Ward was once head of the Anti Suffragist Movement in Britain and yet wrote about the struggles, strength, and future possibilities for women in many of her novels. This is a very touching story of empowerment through personal catastrophe. Anyone who has been dealt a tragic hand in life and rebuilt their lives in a positive manner and influenced others as a result might relate to this story, and someone who is dealing with tragedy or hardship may find this a story of hope. Ps. Mr. Evers, please get your microphone replaced or use different recording software to avoid the clicks and bumps in your otherwise perfect recordings.
