Miss Mapp

E. F. Benson's Mapp and Lucia series, consists of six novels and three short stories. The novels are: Queen Lucia, Lucia in London, Miss Mapp (including the short story The Male Impersonator), Mapp and Lucia, Lucia's Progress (published as The Worshipful Lucia in the U.S.) and Trouble for Lucia.

The novels feature humorous incidents in the lives of (mainly) upper-middle-class British people in the 1920s and 1930s, vying for social prestige and "one-upmanship" in an atmosphere of extreme cultural snobbery. Most of these works are set in the fictional village of "Tilling", which is based on the village of Rye, Sussex, England. "Mallards", the house with the garden room inhabited by Miss Mapp, and later by Lucia, is based on Lamb House, Benson's own home in Rye. Earlier, the house was the Sussex home of writer Henry James. Not my Cup of Tea

(2 stars)

I absolutely loved his book Queen Lucia, the first in the series. But I could not relate to this one . I'll admit after about 5 chapters I gave up.

Miss Mapp should not he missed by E. F. Benson fans.

A five star book, minus one for mixed readers. Not every reader can be the quality of Martin Cliften, as in Queen Lucia. Most did credibly well, but I prefer to have only one reader. Story line is amusing to the point of laughing aloud. I love the characters and their village interactions. I had read this years ago, and very happy to find It in audio. Try it. you will be charmed by Miss Mapp and fellow villagers.

Not as Good As Lucia

(3.5 stars)

weaker storyline, multiple readers. Readers mostly good, one had bad audio setup. Thanks to them all, and like other commentators, prefer single reader for a book whenever it is available.

funny and sweet story

Well read and a great story. I adjusted the speed on some of the readers to my preference, was very enjoyable to listen to!!

Love EF Benson. Would have liked a single really good reader rather than a disjointed group of voices.

(3 stars)

I found it difficult to stay focused. some readers read so fast it was hard to follow.

Thank you!
