Set in the 1890s in Moonstone, a fictional place supposedly located in Colorado, The Song of the Lark is the self-portrait of an artist in the making. The story revolves around an ambitious young heroine, Thea Kronborg, who leaves her hometown to go to the big city to fulfill her dream of becoming a famous opera star.

The novel captures Thea's independent-mindedness, her strong work ethic, and her ascent to her highest achievement. At each step along the way, her realization of the mediocrity of her peers propels her to greater levels of accomplishment, but in the course of her ascent she must discard those relationships which no longer serve her. Some of the readers nearly ruined this lovely story for me. Complete lack of inflection for many chapters. One non native English speaker with accent who clearly didn’t understand what she was reading. Hard to take.

Less than halfway thru...

Enjoying the story and want to find out what happens to Thea, the main character, but this non-English language speaking reader is killing it for me. Was hoping to find another free version but I guess I'm stuck with this one. Actually checked put a copy from the library so I can read the chapters myself that are read by the readers I don't care for.

Beautifully told story of the development of a singer

I had already read this book, but hearing it read by these excellent readers gave a whole new dimension to this exquisite story, a story that mirrors my own life as an opera singer!

I liked the way the book was broken as the main character's life is as she grows.

Would be good if readers knew how to properly say Ms. Cather’s name and also va…
