Alice Adams

A Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Alice Adams chronicles the attempts of a lower middle class American midwestern family at the turn of the 20th century to climb the social ladder. The eponymous heroine is at the heart of the story, a young woman who wants a better place in society and a better life. As Gerard Previn Meyer has stated, "Apart from being the contribution to social history its author conceived it to be, [Alice Adams] is something more, that something being what has attracted to it so large a public: its portrait of a (despite her faults) 'lovable girl'."

effective writing

(5 stars)

! I grew to dislike the mother immensely! what a hag! all characters were well-defined and consistent. reader was excellent. the story was very believable. incredible but there are people like that in this world of both classes. wonder what happened to Walter he was a deficit anyway... You enjoy the story

A great Tarkington book and the reader was excellent

(5 stars)

I decided to try another Tarkington book after listening to the Magnificent Ambersons which I liked a lot. While this novel wasn't as deep as that one it was very moving and the ending will throw you for a loss. By the way the 1935 movie with Katherine Hepburn idiotically changed the ending making the film into some kind of romantic comedy/drama instead of the deeper work it is. I guess during the Depression years they wanted happy endings but the book's ending in its own way was even more happier and noble than the movies' ludicrous ending.

Wonderful Twist at The End

(4 stars)

A poor girl romance that ended in a unexpected way, quite rare for me, and so doubly enjoyable. Story was well read, and I found it a bit slow in some parts. Still worth a listen.

An American Classic

(5 stars)

This Pulitzer Prize winning novel remains a classic, if somewhat forgotten by the passage of time. A poignant story with unforgettable characters and a sublime story line. And Jeannie’s reading brings it all deep into your heart.

I really enjoyed this, especially the reader. And the story certainly didn't end as I expected. Very good and I highly recommend.

Wonderful story of a flawed but brave heroine from recent yesteryear.
