John Linden is a very wealthy man. The people who should inherit his property are his nephew, Curtis Waring, his niece Florence Linden, and his long lost son - if alive. John thinks it would be best if Florence and Curtis were married, and makes it a requirement if Florence wishes to have any of the property.
A boy named Dodger was sent to steal one of the wills of John Linden so that Curtis would inherit all the property. But Florence prevents Dodger from stealing, and they become friends… To the shock of her uncle and cousin, she decides to leave her uncle's house with Dodger instead of marrying Curtis. And what then? Would she be able to get used to being poor? And will she be poor for ever? Adrift in New York? (Summary by Stav Nisser) (4 hr 52 min)

Very good well written nice long story to wrap one's self up into and forget the world for a while. Bridget Gaige's voice is perfect she's quite a story telling enchantress!

Yet another most excellent Librivox reading of a Horatio Alger book!

(4 stars)

Yet another most excellent Librivox reading of a Horatio Alger book, this time by Bridget Gaige, who strangely enough sounds quite similar to some of the other excellent H. Alger readers. Very enjoyable - and, as in some of the others, I particularly like the glimpses of everyday life in old New York.

Fun Alger Book!

You'll want to listen to this one! Bridget Gaige has an amiable voice and does a nice job with this rags to riches story. There is plenty of humor that comes through. The characters are distinct, and the plot is interesting and pulls you into the action. Enjoy!

Very good book, for listeners of all ages! Bridget Gaige’s voice is excellent for the text! If you enjoyed this book, you’d most likely enjoy listening to ‘The Hidden Hand’.

Fun book, great reader

The writing kept the story unique and interesting. The reader Bridget is my favorite; ultra clear and youthful which works perfectly with this story. Thanks to all Librovox volunteers.

Cute story
