Reviews
starts off ok & ends excellently

the other reviews on on about how great the reader is and how adventurous the story is, so i was all set for an amazing audiobook. i found myself disappointed in just the first few minutes of reading and by the second or third chapter i was about ready to give up on the book because it was not read that well and was hard to follow. but i held out until the group started across the desert and by the end i was so glad i finished the book! the reader gets in a good groove and starts to read better and voices characters (the old ladies voice!). the story gets active and exciting (though of course unrealistic). and finishes off with an unexpected find. recommended to young and old male or female!

Fantastic story! I have listened to this recording of this book over 12 times and just as many times to several other Lbrivox recordings of Haggard's works. it's easy to see how the Author and his character have been entertaining us for over a century.
Great narration by John Nicholson.

An interesting story which reminded me lots of Biblical times and ideas. The author wanted to tell an equally good yarn to Treasure Island and succeeded. Just the last few chapters dragged a bit for me. The narator was perfect imo and sounded as though he'd written the story. Another bonus for Librivox.
Very Fun!

This was a very entertaining story and the reader did an excellent job! If you like death defying adventure tales you should love this one. One of the things that I love about Haggard's book is the introduction and use of native African language.
ripping yarn

For the most part it is a wonderful ripping yarn. It suffers slightly in todays terms by some historical prejudices. It was generally well read. There wasan annoying glitch with the book whereby at the end of each chapter it would then skip a chapter so I had to stop it and manually select the correct chapter to listen to next. i do not know whether the fault is with libervox or my device.

Did anybody else catch the fact that it took the reader 12 chapters to get the author's name right not a big deal by no means I just thought that was funny other than that it's a great book and it was read well.

This is an adventure tail in the classic form. It is exciting and full of action, from fending off wild animals right through to terrible battles. The characters are well developed and you get to feel for them as they go through their various struggles. What struggles they are! Perhaps the story takes a little while to get going, but it's not long and it's worth the wait because you will find yourself drawn into the book scene by scene. Well worth a listen, and very well read. If you want to read more of my reviews of free audio found on the web visit http://FreeAudioReview.blogspot.com
Exciting adventure with excellent narration

Thank you so much for your excellent narration. I would never have read this myself but libravox volunteers make wonderful things possible. Exciting adventure in Africa - constant action, great location detail, good character development, loose ends tied up. Life threatening treks (endless desert, steep mountains, deep waters), epic battles, and an evil immortal witch! Excellent but yes this is a product of it's time - racism, colonialism and endangered animal slaughter. Recommended for those who enjoy exotic fanciful adventure 👏👏👏👏👏
