The Repairman

This is a collection of 3 of Harry Harrison marvelous early stories that were published in Galaxy, Analog and Fantastic Universe. The Repairman (1958) is a straight fun SF story of a man getting a job done. It is most typical of his later style in series like the Stainless Steel Rat; Toy Shop (1962), a short piece exploring bureaucratic blindness and one ingenious way around it and The Velvet Glove (1956), my favorite for its writing style, fun perspective, sly social commentary on the scene in 1956 and just plain delightful imagination. And he manages to pack excitement and mystery in at the same time. (1 hr 33 min)

The Repairman

KUDOS to the reader! He was perfect for the wry humorous style of Harry. Especially so for The Repairman. Since the gradual decline of my vision, and subsequent difficulty in smoothly reading any text, I have had a long period of starvation from the literary food for my mind. At one time I had a collection of Sci Fi paperbacks exceeding 500 volumes. I thank all the folks who's efforts have created a wonderful relief for us who miss reading so much. Sincerly, JHB California

they should make a tv show of this would have been hit in the 80

Original and cheeky

This is fun stuff especially if you're a technical type or repair person (professionally or just by nature). The prose sings and the narration is perfect tone.

fun

I have always enjoyed Harry Harrison’s plot lines and ironic humour. These stories are well worth the read.

Eh, a book to pass the time

Interesting but very dull on the action side.

What a fun set of stories!

The summary covers the plots of the individual stories. I agree with the summary, The Velvet Glove is my favorite. I hope there was a sequel! :-) Phil does his usual bang-up job. Thanks Phil! Oct 15, 2014 - Listened to it again because it's just a fun set of stories. Highly recommend it!

My husband and I have listened to each of Phil's Harry Harrison stories dozens of times over the years. You're the best, Phil! No one reads Harrison like you and we appreciate it. The Repairman is the first one I found and still my favourite.
