Simon de Gex, a wealthy and successful MP, is diagnosed with a terminal illness and decides to use his last few months using his wealth and influence to do good. In particular, he determines to guide his protégé and friend, Dale, away from an unfortunate relationship with Lola Brandt, a lady with an unsuitably colourful background.
The book follows what happens to Simon in his quest – and also what further happens when an operation unexpectedly restores his health.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and Simon Evers is a wonderful reader. The narrator/protagonist sets off to be as benevolent as he can before he dies, which is in the not-so-distant future. He throws off his political career, gives away most of his money, and then sets out to get his protege and friend out of the clutches of a low, loose woman. But he discovers that she isn't low and loose; she's uneducated, sure, but she's noble and loving... and already married. And so goes the story. Simon's reading is very enjoyable. Unfortunately, there are short skips in the recording which annoy, plus some corrections were made in a much, much quieter volume than the original. It may have been better to leave whatever error was in the file rather than correct it like that. :( There is plenty of white noise and many seagulls in the background, but these fade away to the ear while listening to the story. I'm still giving it 4 stars for the story and Simon's reading, regardless of the technical problems.

This is the third of William Locke's books I've enjoyed. His $10 words often surpass my $5 education, and his frequent use of foreign languages I find frustrating and condescending. Why can't he just stick to English I wonder? Nevertheless, his stories keep me interested. I always enjoy Simon Evers and was tickled by the background seagulls.

I stayed up all night listening to the journey of the wealthy urbane Simon from dying MP to destitute worker at a charitable institute. Many twists and turns and delightful characters before true love wins out.

What a wonderful surprise! I'd never heard of either author or book, but it's one of the best I've heard in a long time. I especially love the character development. The reader, needless to say, is excellent.

Simon Evers is always flawless with narration and is one of the best on LibriVox. The story is very good with some interesting observations throughout with some surprises as well. Loved it!
