The Brothers Karamazov (version 2)

Gelesen von Tony Addison

(3,681 Sterne; 36 Bewertungen)

Described as the Great Book of Wonders by Arthur Miller, this everyday tale of fraternal affection, sibling rivalry, obsession, lust, parricide, family intrigue, spiritual faith, death by economic deprivation and ultimate salvation in the soul, boasts (among other wonders) the perfect role for Marilyn Monroe, had Arthur only ever written the play. Madness, murder, mayhem and the courtroom drama to end all courtroom dramas it may be, but it is also (strangely) hilariously funny. It's all in the point of view. - Summary by Tony Addison (46 hr 24 min)

This is my favorite translation. I’ve tried for many chapters; however, listening to this reader is as painful as watching “The King’s Speech” when the king was reading, trying to overcome his stammer. There’s something extraordinarily unnatural about the reading.

Tony Addison Reads Text Professionally

(5 Sterne)

It is strange to me to see the negative criticism of Tony Addison’s read of Brothers Karamazov. For years I have been recommending precisely this version on LibriVox because of the skill with which the text is read. Sure, if you are looking for a straight read this probably isn’t the version for you. But for me, he seems to capture the spirit of the characters in a way that someone only very familiar with the text could. As someone who has read the text this narration gave new life to it for me. Bravo Mr. Addison, well done.

After reading the previous reviews I really wasn’t sure what to expect so I listened for myself. I found that this reader, while he annunciates clearly and precisely, speaks far too slowly. I could barely listen farther than a couple sentences. Even speeding up the recording didn’t help because he then becomes very choppy. I much prefer the version 1 recording that is read by multiple volunteers. Mr. Addison, if you read this review, I would probably listen to more recordings of you if you could read a bit faster. This is a difficult work to narrate and I congratulate you on your dedication.

Don't bother

(1 Sterne)

I gave up halfway through the first chapter and switched to the other recording. I don't know what the other reviewer was thinking but this voice is unbearable. I can see you're trying to enunciated each word but oh my god, it's excruciating.

(5 Sterne)

Excellent reader. Good inflection, emotion and voices for different characters. I don’t think it’s too slow. The content merits a slow read because there is much to absorb and consider.

Much Too Slowly Read

(1 Sterne)

The reader reads too slowly. I'll be dead before finishing this book if I continue listening. How could this have been approved?
