Rashleigh Allerton, a wealthy New Yorker, quarrels with his well-to-do fiancée Barbara and impetuously says that he will marry instead the first person he meets. The book follows the result of this absurd promise, with consequences that neither of them (nor Rashleigh’s faithful elderly man-servant Steptoe) expect. - Summary by Simon Evers (8 hr 58 min)

A good story, but it's the reader who really makes it.

Beautiful and well read !

A beautiful story in which complex characters are handled both by the writer and reader, Simon Evers, with a magical touch. It's a story well worth listening to. I was engrossed. Mr. Evers handled the characterisation of individual characters brilliantly. There's a great deal of philosophy that brings you in touch with what human nature truly is, and it's handled in a way that sinks into your soul effortlessly. Absolutely grand!

First of all, thank you to Simon Evers for doing an amazing job reading this story. Very well done. What a great story. The author did a great job with building the characters in the story and in keeping you interested. It was story that really depicts the social glass issues yet the pride in the loser class in being self sufficient.

Unpredictability Predictable

Such an EXCRUCIATINGLY WONDERFUL TALE!! of course by just reading the 'dust jacket' one knows the ending of this novel, it's the twists and turns that make this a brilliantly delivered tale. Simon Evers.... you are an international treasure! i actually started a "Simom Evers Favorites" list of my own :-) March 2021

Nice novel

A romantic story perfectly read by Simon Evers. Lettie's humbleness and her worshipping of Rashleigh seems far-fetched and outdated for 21st century, but it was normal in the beginning of the 20th. Rashleigh himself is a weak creature, female characters are much better written.

Excellent Reader, Good Story

This was a good study in character based relationship, the dynamics of controlling personalities, and their counterparts. However, Simon Evers makes this story truly come alive with his incredible knack for dialogue. He is a great Artist.
