A sweet, simple tale of how friendship and honesty triumph over money. The protagonist’s pun of a name—Ernest Bliss—foreshadows the plot in which this bored young millionaire transforms his indolent self and finds love. Typical of its era (1919), this book contains a few antisemitic stereotypes. The story was made famous by the 1936 film The Amazing Quest of Ernest Bliss with Cary Grant and Mary Brian.
E. Phillips Oppenheim (1866-1946), was born in London and wrote more than one hundred novels as well as many short stories and film adaptations, some under the name of Anthony Partridge. His 1941 autobiography, The Pool of Memory, is well worth reading. (Summary by Adrian Praetzellis) (9 hr 8 min)

A lovely story. All the characters come to life in this excellent reading. It held my interest throughout and, although it is a moral tale, there is no sermonising . It covers many situations experienced by those living a hard life and I hope it did / does make others realise what destitution is like. SPOILER ALERT !!! Wonderful happy ending.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, it was very interesting. The characters were believable and I was swept up in their stories. I couldn't wait to hear what was would happen next. the reader was excellent

This story was reminiscent of "Around the World in Eighty Days," with a lot of Charles Dickens thrown in and even a little Mark Twain (particularly, "Connecticut Yankee"). I first heard about the story when my wife and I watched the Cary Grant movie version of it. The movie, at just over an hour, did not have the time to develop the story, leaving is a little confused over some of the details. Since the overall story was nice enough, I decided to enjoy the original novel. I was not disappointed at all! This book could easily be made into a very long movie, or even a miniseries! I found the very well-read audio book on LibriVox, which brought the characters very well to life by Adrian Praetzellis. I would highly recommend this book — and Mr. Praetzellis' reading of it — to everyone who enjoys the classics from ones such as Dickens, Twain, and Verne.

Wonderful, uplifting and heartwarming story, it kept me riveted from beginning to end and I felt enriched after reading it - plenty of food for thought. The reader is exceptional (professional actor perhaps?) with his range of different voices and accents. Thank you Librivox, thank you reader 🧡

A riches-to-rags-to-riches again tale without any tricky coincidences or gimmicks, just a well plotted story of personal choice and growth. Narration is superb. The only complaint I have is that the love interest could have been better developed. She's a bit insipid.
