The Histories of Herodotus of Halicarnassus is considered the first work of history in Western literature. Written about 440 BC, the Histories tell the story of the war between the Persian Empire and the Greek city-states in the 5th century BC. Herodotus traveled extensively around the ancient world, conducting interviews and collecting stories for his book. The rise of the Persian Empire is chronicled, and the causes for the conflict with Greece. Herodotus treats the conflict as an ideological one, frequently contrasting the absolute power of the Persian king with the democratic government of the Greeks. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia.) retelling of a classic

Loved getting this history lesson on my phone! Readers are excellent with only a few exceptions. Pronunciations of names and places are good.

I greatly appreciate all the hard work of the readers! thank you

i think it is a good tranlation. thanks to the readers.

Most of the readers did quite well with all the difficult names.

This first volume concerns itself very little with ancient Greece. Instead, Herodotus writes mostly about the ancient Egyptian and Persian empires. It's hard to separate fact from fiction since Herodotus describes so many odd traditions and events some of which are difficult to believe. Something I found hard to believe is Herodotus' claim that the ancient Greek gods were actually borrowed from the Egyptians.

Good reading but more consistency would be nice.

Great book with good reading but it would be nice if readers kept consistent pronunciation of names. it can be a little annoying to hear some person or place name given a verity pronunciations by different readers from one chapter to the next.
