A great dog story, a well told tale--the naturalist and adventurer John Muir recounts how he and his companion, a dog named Stickeen, each, alone, confronted and conquered their fears of an icy Alaskan glacier in 1880. (Summary by Sue Anderson) (0 hr 52 min)

It’s been years since I’ve read Muir. I’d forgotten just how world class he is. The book is enchanting without being sappy like so many “doggy stories.” Anything by John Muir is wonderfully accurate, passionate and eminently readable.

If you love dogs, you will absolutely love this wonderful heartwarming short story (less than an hour long). I have listened to it countless times and, I’m sure I will listen to it countless times in the future. It is very well written by John Muir - the famous naturalist and explorer of the late 1800’s. This story will consume your attention and take you along for the thrill and joy of this adventure of mankind and dog. And I guarantee that you won’t be able to listen to this story just one time. Finally, John Muir’s description of Stickeen’s joy (the dog) is fabulous; and if you have had a dog as a pet, you can just visualize the scene. This is a wonderful gem of a story that I happen to stumble upon years ago. For anyone who hasn’t yet read or listen to this story, you are in for a real treat. Enjoy!!!
