George MacDonald was an influential Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. MacDonald’s works (particularly his fairy tales and fantasy novels) claimed the admiration of such authors as J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and Madeleine L’Engle.

The Wise Woman fairy tale was one of MacDonald’s more popular works. This delightful story describes how a woman of mysterious powers pays visits to two very different young girls: one a princess, the other a shepherd’s daughter. Neither girl is left unchanged by the startling events that are unleashed as a result: and the reader is confronted by astonishing fairy-worlds in which the girls are forced to choose between good and evil.

The Wise Woman has been subsequently republished under various titles, including:
- The Lost Princess, and
- A Double Story. (Summary by Godsend)

A story well worth listening to. A parable of the good character needed of children and the attention parents need to pay towards it. Like George MacDonald's "Back of the North Wind" the Christ figure in the story is a wise woman. >>The narration is good (but not great). The audio quality is very poor, and required turning down the bass and treble (to heighten voice tones) and turning up the volume in my car. I almost did not listen due to the poor quality.

This wonderful story is, on the surface, about two girls, their parents, and a mysterious woman. But it is a spot-on depiction of how hard it is to realize our problems in character, and how many stages it takes to change our hearts.

Amazing piece of literature

One of MacDonlads best in my mind and a great job of reading by the host!

decent story...omg some of the readers. Half are superb,

The story is mostly worth it. The readers help. when you hit...certain chapters...you can see where you go 4 or 10 chapters in a row.....then it takes 2 months to get in the mood to tollerate a chapter or 2. Still thank you for the readers. Check out Lilith by the same author. 1 reader and a masterpiece. mostly.

Unable to hear

I was really excited to listen to this. The narrator seemed good as well. Unfortunately it was so quiet I could not hear in the car or on my iPhone while I did dishes, which is when I usually listen. I searched for apps to help boost the sound but finally gave up. I heard snippets of the story but the sound just became frustrating.
