How the Other Half Lives: Studies Among the Tenements of New York (1890) was a pioneering work of photojournalism by Jacob Riis, documenting the squalid living conditions in New York City slums in the 1880s. It served as a basis for future muckraking journalism by exposing the slums to New York City’s upper and middle class. The title of the book is a reference to a phrase of François Rabelais, who wrote in Pantagruel: "one half of the world does not know how the other half lives". (Summary by Wikipedia) (8 hr 50 min)

So glad to find this here

I did a search for this, and here it is! I love the nonfiction on LibriVOX best. Once a lazy bookworm like me becomes dependent on AUDIObooks, nonfiction is hard to find ! Another reason to love love LOVE LibriVOX.

uneven recording because of the amount of voices used, but a staple if youre learning early sociology (dated as it may be, and boy it is dated). thanks to the volunteers.

Great read!

very much enjoyed this book!

She did a terrible job reading it. I love LibriVox recordings. I've used it a lot but this reading was horrific.
