This is a COMPELLING semi-autobiography of a woman who experienced severe highs and lows! Starting many things at a very young age in life & experiencing incredible happiness! Only all too soon to find herself in extreme opposite situations. This book shows some of the true heartlessness that some human beings can display, as well as some family. It conveys hypocrisy of some in the religious world. It also displays true grit and what desperation can do to drive a person! This book will inevitably cause the reader to experience several emotions and thoughts, some pleasant, some not so nice. "Live" the journey along with the author! A MUST read! this is the second book I've 'read' presented by Deborah Knight. i love her presentation. She has a lot of "speakos" (oral version of 'typos'). but her voice, meter, And enthusiasm more than compensate. Plus, And loved us enough to read to us and i GREATLY appreciate that! !! the book itself is. ... incredible. as a Christian, it broke my heart many times, but it also challenged me to love my family as much as I would a stranger. (which is hard, sometimes, ijs).
Hyacinth is a common flower, it's not hard to pronounce
The story holds up for being 150+ years old, but the narration is terrible. The constant mispronunciations (especially of the brother's name) are annoying at the best of times and infuriating at the worst. She also fails to edit out her own mistakes, often hearing random noises in the background of her recording, or having her stumble over a line and failing to remove it. It's free, so you can only expect so much, but still...
Superb story, great narration!

This is a really great story based on the life of the authoress. I cannot believe the things this woman endured from her family. She certainly has a detestable mother in law. You might want to go to Wikipedia and read up on Fanny Fern which is very interesting. The narrator was beyond fantastic this is the first recording of hers I have listened to and I hope she continues to narrate for Librivox. High recommend this story.

Some of the characters in this novel are infuriating to the point that it was difficult to continue reading at times. The second half of the story makes up for the frustrations of the first half in some respects, only for new ones to arise.
good, with some flaws

well read over all, with an engaging voice and distinct character readings. The only problem is that the reader does not know how to pronounce a number of more antiquated terms, which is a bit distracting at times.

wery nicely done, and wonderful to have one reader all the way through, though I spent forever looking around me for the chiming sound, before I realized it was in the recording.

This book needs a sequel to follow Ruth'a life to the end! Her story is so complex, it ends very abruptly!
Extremely good book

Just goes to show, when life throws you lemons.... make lemonade! All praises to the reader as well!
