This is the final volume in the trilogy following the smart, stylish, divorced and independent businesswoman Emma McChesney in her career from stenographer, then drummer (traveling salesman) to owner of her own company. Edna Ferber first gained success with these stories and later went on to write Show Boat, Giant and other well known books. First published in 1915, Emma's son, Jock, has moved to Chicago with his new wife. Emma decides to sell in South America and proves she has not lost her magic touch. Emma gets involved in romance, saving a business and many other things. Emma symbolizes the ideal woman at the dawn of the twentieth century: sharp, capable, charming, and progressive. This review is actually meant for all three books of this series by Edna Ferber. I liked all of them, but perhaps my favorite was the first one. This last one was more repetitious at times and more slow paced. Still, they were all well written, and the main theme quite interesting. Of course, the reader, the incredible Phil Chenevert, made all the difference, because he made the characters shine alive with his voice and expressiveness. May God Bless Phil and the gift he left for so many LibriVox readers. Thank you.

when Phil starts reading, you really want the book to keep on going, especially when it's a work as great as anything written by Edna Ferber. but alas, this is the final book of the series... it was a great week!

Edna Ferber is one of the greatest American writers of the early- and mid-20th century. Her clipped style doesn't allow a single extraneous word, which moves her stories along at a very modern pace. Ferber's comments on the changing role of women in home and business are full of wit and insight, never preachy or didactic. Phil Chenevert's reading is perfect. Many thanks, Phil. maybe I made a mistake in listening to all 3 of these books back to back (this is the third of three) because i didn't find this one so engaging as the first 2 which are marvellous. it feels more like a sequence of short stories, which it may be, and I think that detracted from it for me. the reading was wonderful as ever.

excellent reading by Phil. I am very happy that he did all three books to the trilogy of this. even though this book is 100 years old he makes it come alive with his reading.

a neat story, romantic without being sappy. The early mispronounced "magneto" do end, and the rest are single word issues. It is worth the effort to finish it.

I loved this trilogy, wonderful characters and the storyline is perfect. Phil reads as though he was born to tell stories and adds his own nuances to the characters and plot, brilliant.
