I liked this book tremendously! I even liked that I hated a certain character so much that I would find myself rolling my eyes and complaining out loud to myself whenever she would speak... lol. Of course miss Klett did an amazing job! (as usual :-)) She has the ability to melt your heart with some of the tones she uses with certain characters. Her command of giving different distinct voices to the characters is second to none! Hands down the best reader I've ever listened to!.... I have listened to her recordings exclusively for over a month now... please enjoy I sure did!

Ok... This is a story about an incredibly immature young man who is a jealous, possibly sociopathic husband. It is a fault of the author in understanding the general character of men that she expects us to sympathize with him or believe that his reverses are, in any way, the reflection of normal human maturity. The author is trying to imitate Jane Austin without the careful insight into character that Austin has. A couple of the stock characters are annoying beyond endurance. I listened to it to the end only because Elizabeth Klett was reading it. It IS worth it on that score.

Elizabeth Klett is the first narrator I ever listened to on LibriVox or anywhere else for that matter. She is flawless and I loved her narration of this book and I loved the book. A young wealthy man marries the love of his life but they don’t appear suitable for each other. Helen is only 18 and quite naive. She has a strong supportive family while her new husband has never experienced a close family relationship. Not only internal but external forces are affecting their new marriage and Helen just wants to go home. It’s a light often funny look at times past and makes for a delicious listen.

As usual I really enjoyed listening to E. Klett's reading. However, the story with its multitude of characters and side plots failed to keep my attention, as I kept being confused by who was who, and wondered for the first dozen chapters what the title had to do with the story. I much preferred "The semi-detached house" by the same author (also read by E. Klett", which is whittier and has a more compact cast of characters and story line.

Profound portrayal of personalities, dynamics within families and marriages. Humorous but genuine relationships are depicted by a wise observer. The author confronts sexual biases , late 19 Th century political change , and its economic barriers with a deceptive light manner but insightful touch.

I liked this story much more than Semi-Detached House. The characters are deeper as well as problematics. I liked how Eden described the conflict between husband and wife and its resolution. Also kudos to Elizabeth Klett, her reading is the best as always.

Very well read as always! Thank you Elizabeth! A most Jane Austen-esq novel with a sufficiently happy ending to make up for the first frustratingly questionable months of marriage between the hero and heroine. Happily and well resolved! Worth a listen!
