The Sign of the Four (1890), also called The Sign of Four, is the second novel featuring Sherlock Holmes written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle wrote four novels and 56 stories starring the fictional detective.
The story is set in 1888. The Sign of the Four has a complex plot involving service in East India Company, India, the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a stolen treasure, and a secret pact among four convicts ("the Four" of the title) and two corrupt prison guards. It presents the detective's drug habit and humanizes him in a way that had not been done in the preceding novel A Study in Scarlet (1887). one of the biggest issues I ever have with audiobooks is the reader. David Clark narrates multiple Sherlock Holmes books and does the best job of any narrator I have ever heard. His voice isn't flat, he differentiates between characters in a pleasant and not overly dramatic way and his English (I believe) accent is a pleasant level of authenticity. The book itself is delightful, just like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's other pieces. I adore them, even if the author himself wasn't fond if his detective.

David Clarke does an excellent job reading and interpreting this and other Sherlock Holmes stories, and the various intonations and accents he applies when different characters are speaking make listening to him read all that more pleasurable. The audio production of his work is first rate, as well. He truly does a professional job. I highly recommend anything he reads.

Enjoyed this very early Holmes 3ffort. However, thank goodness he improved so drastically as he aged. I have been a fan of mysteries fo almost 70 years, and count Holmes as a favorite right along with Josephine Tey and Marjorie Allingham. Do find that good grammar and clever word usage count for a great deal more than flying bullets and jumping in and out of a variety of beds....mind over matter 3very time!!!

First of all, I love stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and especially the Sherlock Holmes stories. (Those were the first really English literature I ever read) But since this is an audio book: Dear David Clarke, Thank you so much for the beautiful storytelling!!! Sometimes people forget that reading a story to others can be quite challenging. Honestly, I would not what anyone to have to listen to me reading Haensel und Gretel! But listening to a narration by you is great fun!

David Clarke is a well kept secret of the audio book world. I have been introduced to him through LibraVox and his are basically the only books I download. great for walking, commuting or sitting at home. and The Sign of the Four is one of the best of the best Holmes books. enjoy!!

I appreciate so much the talents of David Clarke as he reads with his wonderful impressions of all of the characters voices, which makes the story really come alive. I think this is one of the best Sherlock Holmes stories because of all the complications and locations and inside look at Holmes's personality.

I read SH along with an audio book and this version is a brilliant companion to the book! The accent is perfect. The tone and voice for each character is excellent, I could feel each of their personalities come to life.

the text is a bit rough but a great story I think better than then the previous one. you get a very good insight into who home truly is as a person.
