Pretty good mystery story
kerriganm
A good story with lively characters. Even though the book is nominally feminist (female detective!) I got pretty annoyed with the male characters. Considering the time it was written, the misogyny is hardly surprising, but it got under my skin nonetheless. I suppose it's possible that, writing as a feminist, the effect was intentional.
awesome story worth the time

This is one of those books you stumble upon and are great-full you did. The reader is perfect and a very warming mystery. Worth listening to.

I really liked this story until the ending. If you needed help you'd ask someone & wait to find out if he could help you before asking a 2nd person for help, especially if you wanted to keep it all a secret. Then there was a surprise announcement that didn't add to the story. It wasn't explained if it was why the person needed help to begin with. Whether it was the reason or not I don't understand why he wouldn't have told his loved ones about it all from the beginning. I did like Millie & her philosophy on how some people need help & understanding not prison. However, I'm not sure if she got with her former boss in the end or not. I'm left with some unanswered questions. I wish there were more recordings of this author as I may be able to learn more about Millie.
Characters just not like able

I really wanted to like this story. I have listened to many read by Smalheer and she does a good job. However the characters in this story were just not likable or relatable. The story dragged for ever and all the interesting action was shoved in at the end. The man’s fascination and obsession with the gem stones seemed creepy. The woman seemed weak and pathetic. Usually I can find something to like in a mystery but not this time. The stars are for the reader not the book.
Really engaging reading style

J. Smallheer's reading style is great - very engaging in large part because she herself seems so engaged with what she is reading. Was the lady detective in the story, who sits quietly and knits, maybe the "original" Miss Marple?
not your typical detective story

First, this reader is fantastic. The story is unusual but kept my attention. I was expecting a riveting ending but it actually left me hanging.
Great Reader and Story

This was wonderful. I can only listen to certain readers, and she definitely one of them. Charming story. Easy to listen to. Bravo 👏👏👏
