Ellen Craft

Ellen Craft was born into slavery in 1826 in Macon, Georgia, and became an extraordinary figure in the abolitionist movement. In 1848, she and her husband, William Craft, devised a daring plan to escape to freedom. Ellen, who was of mixed race and could pass for white, disguised herself as a male slave owner while William posed as her slave. Their remarkable journey took them from the South to the North, eventually leading them to England, where they became vocal advocates for the abolition of slavery and spoke about their harrowing experiences.
