Emma Lazarus
Emma Lazarus was an American poet and activist born on July 22, 1849, in New York City. She came from a well-to-do Jewish family and began writing poetry at an early age, developing a deep passion for literature and social issues. Lazarus is perhaps best known for her sonnet "The New Colossus," which was inscribed on a plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty. This powerful poem reflects her commitment to the immigrant experience, capturing the spirit of hope and refuge that Lady Liberty embodies. Her work often explored themes of Jewish identity and social justice, making her a significant figure in both literary and humanitarian circles of her time.
