In this intriguing story, we meet Karin Kudelka, who may be an alien captain on an interstellar starship or simply one of the best waitresses around.

This adaptation is based on "The Cold Equations," a renowned Science Fiction short story by Tom Godwin, first published in Astounding Magazine in 1954. The pilot episode aims to launch a proposed hour-long Science Fiction series from CBC Radio's Drama Department, featuring commentary by SF writer Robert Sawyer and an interview with Jamaican speculative fiction writer Nalo Hopkinson.
