Transferring old mono discs to digital. SUGGESTION. When playing or transferring monaural phonograph discs with a STEREOPHONIC phono cartridge, always make sure your stereo cartridge is WIRED FOR MONAURAL PLAY. There are several ways to do this. The EASIEST way is to buy an RCA, "Y", stereo to mono patch cord. You can get this from any electronics store. — Amazon, B & H Electronics, Sweetwater, Wall Mart, Circuit City, Radio Shack , etc. A "Y" connector will have TWO FEMALE RCA SOCKETS (i.e., the stereo end). These two wires combine into ONE wire (i.e., the mono end) with a single MALE RCA plug. Unplug your turntable's RCA plugs from your present preamp/amp or digital recorder, etc.. Plug the stereo turntable's TWO male RCA plugs into the two female RCA jacks of the "Y: Connector. Plug the "Y" connector's one male RCA plug into ONE channel of the phono input you have been using. WHA-LA. You're DONE. You have just turned your STEREO turntable into a MONO turntable. Left or right channel? —It does not matter, but professionals always use the LEFT channel when running a monaural signal through a stereo circuit. You will never forget -right? NOW, when you transfer this 78 RPM disc to digital, you will instantly lose about HALF the noise and distortion presently heard in this posting. Where did the noise go? Since this noise was NOT intentionally lathed into the record, the noise from the two groove walls is OUT OF PHASE and, thus, will cancel itself out. The noise and distortion will be GONE. And then you can run your de-clicker, Para-EQ rumble filter at 20 Hz, EQ - compensation, pitch control, normalisation, excitation, etc. HAVE FUN, and remember that YOUR work may become the standard for the next thousand years. ARCHIVING IS IMPORTANT Paix.
