A Study in Scarlet
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Read by Laurie Anne Walden
A Study in Scarlet, a short novel published in 1887, was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's first Sherlock Holmes story. At the beginning of the book, Dr. Watson meets the detective for the first time and we ride along with them to the scene of a murder. The crime baffles the Scotland Yard detectives, but of course Holmes solves it easily. In the second half of the story, the scene shifts to Utah as we learn the murderer's history. The action returns to London in the last two chapters. In his first adventure, Holmes demonstrates many of the traits for which he later became well known: meticulous study of a crime scene, brilliant deductive reasoning, aptitude for chemistry and music, and the somewhat annoying habit of withholding crucial facts from Watson (and consequently the reader) until the conclusion of the case. Reviews
excellent story and narrator

This story is an excellent introduction to AC Doyle's work. The narrator, Ms. Walden, is superb. She clearly understands the story deeply and put a great deal of work into the recording. Here's hoping she will record other books soon.
Interesting story

The first half was was interesting but not as good as his latter work. The second half about the Mormons was mostly fictional/ not historically correct. I'm thinking that some research for the story was taken from the Mormon church but most was from anti Mormon wild stories, propaganda, predigest fear mongering, so do not take as fact.

good story. & the fool who rants about the author being prejudice, is really an ignorant person. there were women "pushed" into plural marriage as you write it. what a uphamism. just because a story writes about an extreme few individuals, they are not saying the entire group is the same. let history be. there were brutally blu t books written about brutal times. some people will not like the topics in such books but that doesn't mean the books should be changed. they are commentaries on history & sometimes fictitious. if it don't apply, let it fly ! or maybe you would like to live in a society where the authorities do a little book burning once in a while ! and as far as the book, it was good as far as original Sherlock Holmes stories go. 1 of the best. but there are many other books I prefer. that said, it's 1 of his better books.
Pretty good

This is the first book in the Sherlock Holmes series. It is entertaining and well-read; the only reason I am not giving 5 stars is due to the first two chapters of part two (which are very dry). The story picks up again after that. Anyone who has read either The Adventures or The Memoirs first may be slightly surprised at the dedication of the whole second half the novel to the backstory of one of the main characters.
Sweet revenge, I love the ending.

I almost stopped reading when the second part of the story started. I know now the connection to the part of the book. I wish a British man was the reader. Some parts sounds so corny with her voice, I found myself rolling my eyes at the second part often. I gave it four stars because of the reader.
The Mormons mentioned here! Long live Gen Z.

I really enjoyed the book as well as the narrator's style. Although I would prefer real voice changes for each character, it doesn't change the fact that it is really well read, taking into consideration that spanish is my first language but been learning english since I was very little. Totally recommend it!
cool book

This a great Sherlock Holmes. The reader is really good, but the second part of the book is very boring. I really don’t know how Conan Doyle could write that. However, it can understood if you read the Wikipedia article. Overall, it is very nice.
