John Carter, an American Civil War veteran, goes prospecting in Arizona and, when set upon by Indians, is mysteriously transported to Mars, called "Barsoom" by its inhabitants. Carter finds that he has great strength on this planet, due to its lesser gravity. Carter soon falls in among the Tharks, a nomadic tribe of the planet's warlike, four-armed, green inhabitants. Thanks to his strength and combat abilities he rises in position in the tribe and earns the respect eventually the friendship of Tars Tarkas, one of the Thark chiefs. (7 hr 26 min)

This is the first of the Barsoom series by ERB. I am reading them (okay listening to them) all in order. John Carter is an adventurer of earth who mysteriously finds himself on Mars. There, he is captured by the green men of Mars called the Tharks, but he is strong, and wins notoriety and riches for himself. He also meets Dejah Thoris, the princess of Helium, whom he falls in love with. He escapes with her only to be separated from her and find himself captured by another band of Tharks. Whew what a ride! Reading was excellent.

Not normally a genre i delve into much, but i am very glad i took on chance on this novel; would recommend for everyone, all ages.

John Carter's Barsoom adventures are frankly preposterous, even for Burroughs' day when people thought there might really be canals on Mars. However, the story has a momentum that propels it too fast to allow the reader to reflect on the inconsistencies of the plot or of the world Burroughs created. The constant cliffhangers and mild titillation gave the book great popularity among several generations of readers, including a number of science fiction writers who cited it as an important early influence. Seek the light
So far, I have listened to Mark Nelson’s other reads of sci-fi ventures - the short stories read by him and highly recommended. This is my first time listening to him read an Edgar Burroughs story. Burroughs is a consummate actions story writer. Mark Nelson, read it flawlessly making it thoroughly enjoyable. I recommend anything read by Mark Nelson, and I will be downloading the rest of the series looking for Mark Nelson’s read.

I loved this book, its action and pace kept my interest. The more I think about it this book is much more fantasy than sci-fi where the outcome is not in doubt, really. It is not surprising that it is a story of Europeans going to a new land and through force become their saviors or some such nonsense. Excellent adventure.
