(4.3 stars; 158 reviews)

Chicago engineer Jack Howland is sent to the edge of the Canadian barren lands north of Prince Albert to establish a train route through some of the most treacherous terrain in North America. He would soon learn that it was not only the terrain that was forbidding, as he begins to understand why the previous engineers sent on the same mission had been forced to give up the task and flee back to the south. Mysterious visitors, suspicious characters, strange apparent coincidences, and one particularly mysterious girl meet Howland at every turn in this suspenseful tale of adventure, excitement, danger, and romance set in the northern Canadian wilderness. An Epic Adventure

(4 stars)

In this nature filled fiction , the aspiring Jack Howland, a young engineer from Chicago sets out to the north to trailblaze a new railroad line in the a spirit of american enterprise.  As Jack Howland enters the french populated regions of northern Canada, he discovers that his life is pursued by unknown forces for unknown reasons.  This adventure was a thrilling to dive into the fighting will of man and the long reaches of love and I heartily recommend this composition to any reader who enjoys the excitement of action packed scenes and the mystery of romance !

JOC has done it again. He has gotten my interest so that I could not stop reading. He kept me in the dark until the very last instant, then resolved everything to my satisfaction. Roger Melin always gives a boost to any book, but seems to be especially great on the works of JOC.

This story is mostly good. John is sent to be a replacement engineer on a railroad build. When he arrives the two engineers he replaces are clearly terrified and in a hurry to leave. As soon as he arrives, he is attacked by people clearly bent on killing him. Why is he under attack? Who is behind the attacks? The story does a good job of keeping you on the edge at the beginning, but gets kind of lame and feels like the author is stretching a bit. But it is still a good story, just not a great story. Reader is good, he is very easy to listen to and understand.

Very well contracted tale! Very strange things can happen in small isolated areas. I'm most amazed at how uncrazy the crazy lady really was! As always, well read kind sir. Take the time to listen!

superb narrator !

Excellent reader! Interesting story of the Canadian north with a gripping and well-paced plot. Some of the violence a bit superfluous.

Another Great Book!

Yet another great book filled with suspense and adventure, read by one of LibriVox's best narrators.
