Richard II is a historical tragedy by William Shakespeare that delves into the complexities of power, kingship, and the nature of authority. The play centers on King Richard II, whose reign is marked by political strife and personal turmoil, ultimately leading to his downfall.

Set against the backdrop of late 14th-century England, the narrative explores the conflict between Richard and his cousin, Henry Bolingbroke, who challenges the king's rule. As Richard grapples with his identity and the consequences of his decisions, themes of legitimacy, betrayal, and the fragility of power emerge, painting a vivid portrait of a monarch in crisis.

Shakespeare's rich language and intricate characterizations invite listeners to reflect on the nature of leadership and the impact of personal choices on the course of history. Richard II serves as the first play in a series that chronicles the tumultuous events leading to the War of the Roses, setting the stage for the dramatic conflicts that follow.

Slow reading

(3 stars)

this may be a wonderful speed for people learning English or hearing Shakespeare for the first time. In any other case, the reading is slow and laborious.

Hereford's reader sounds too weak and unsure. As he is a major character found it difficult to make it past Act I. Uneven. King Richard's reader much more convincing.
