Jack Bristol shot the sheriff and stole his horse. He rode off, not into the sunset, but into the mountains. The mountain man held him captive for months and then released him. Why? And why did the girl scream with terror when she saw his face? Read this 1922 pulp Western to find the answers. Max Brand was one of many pseudonyms used by Frederick Schiller Faust (1892 – 1944), an American author known primarily for his thoughtful and literary Westerns. - Summary by david wales (3 hr 56 min)

Max Brand weaves a story of an honest man!

(5 Sterne)

You can't imagine more strikes against our hapless hero, Jack Bristol, a few caused by his own miscalculations, but the most grievous and fatal pressed upon him as his miscalculations take him places he never would have otherwise gone. As the strikes pile up, we see the threads of a unique horse, a girl who believes her womanly instincts not her own eyes, and Jack's honorable nature weave together in a wonderfully crafted story! You can help but ride this story to the end! Kudos to the good reader!

Best Max Brand story.

(4,5 Sterne)

This was a fast moving and fun story to listen to with just the right amount of "Susan" in it. I feel like I've been horse back riding for the last 3 hours over pretty exciting terrain. Reader sounds like a real western cowboy, too. Thank you.

Very entertaining and we'll read

Glass of Sherry or Shot of Jack

(4 Sterne)

Typical western. Well read and enjoyable. Quick, almost abrupt, ending complete with improbable elements throughout to put the cherry on the cake. Worth a casual listen.

YOU WILL NEVER GUESS THE END

I never cease to be amazed at Brand's unique plots. Enjoy this entertaining tale read by one our finest narrators.

Pretty good oration... The story is action packed and the good guy wins. It hits the spot for a good western.

An engaging tale

This is a story with more to it than a lot of the western genre of old. I really enjoyed the twists and turns and so on. The reading was good too. Well worth a listen da
