The House in the Mist

It was a night to drive any man indoors. Not only was the darkness impenetrable, but the raw mist enveloping hill and valley made the open road anything but desirable to a belated wayfarer like myself.

Being young, untrammeled, and naturally indifferent to danger, I was not averse to adventure; and having my fortune to make, was always on the lookout for El Dorado, which, to ardent souls, lies ever beyond the next turning. Consequently, when I saw a light shimmering through the mist at my right, I resolved to make for it and the shelter it so opportunely offered.

But I did not realize then, as I do now, that shelter does not necessarily imply refuge, or I might not have undertaken this adventure with so light a heart. Yet, who knows? The impulses of an unfettered spirit lean toward daring, and youth, as I have said, seeks the strange, the unknown and, sometimes, the terrible. (Exerpt from Chapter I) (1 hr 49 min)

I love AKG!

(5 Sterne)

this is the second time I've heard this story..... intense! it's one of her shortest and yet passion is depicted in a most extraordinary way. Carolin is one of my favorites..... keep reading please, Carolin! Okiekid..... when are you going to stop listening? can't wait for the day. I've been listening to a lot of stories.... and I always read the reviews. I keep seeing your negative comments and am getting tired of them. can you not find a single positive thing to say about someone? I have good advice for you...... if you have a negative thing to say, find something positive to say about the very same thing.... same person. can't wait to see it!

You have to love the romanticism in this book

(5 Sterne)

It recalls to mind when people still believed in love at first sight that lived forever. Sigh! That aside, this is also a good mystery. A man's fortune is about to be divided up between his undeserving relatives. However, he insists on one formality - a last supper. A weary traveler stumbles onto the scene and becomes an unwilling participant in the story that is about to unfold. Oh and what a story! Carolin did an excellent job bringing another AKG to life. Enjoy!

Fantastic Tale!

(5 Sterne)

Ah, here's one of those old books that makes you wonder why it isn't a universally known classic. What a fun find during my October hunt for fresh gothic, ghostly, or surreal reading. Great narration from Carolin, too. Yes, native English speakers can hear her accent, but it is charming and adds to the misty atmosphere of the story. If your ear isn't used to listening to such speakers, give it a chance to acclimate - it's part of living in a global village! :)

An entertaining tale with a happy ending for the deserving. Very well read. Thank you to the reader.

Sparky

The use of vocabulary no longer in our culture was a pleasure to hear...the story was well presented but as always, I do not like to hear the part of a man read by a woman...somewhere along the line the ending was predictable but not a deterrent... I recommend this as a good story but especially for the usage of descriptive adjectives

The House in the Mist by Anna Katharine Green

(5 Sterne)

With the mystery of the House in the Mist being touched upon as the story goes on, truer words have never been spoken, as the reader states "shelter does not necessarily implies safety or refuge", beware! A good lesson for today's times to be learned. Very well read by Carolin, much enjoyed!

A gem!

(5 Sterne)

A gripping tale of avarice and family hatred, revealed in a mysteriously mist-shrouded setting. The descriptions, the characters, and the plot are unforgettable. The reader's enchanting accent and fine pacing seamlessly enhance this uniquely unfolding story about the reading of a will. Don't miss this one!
