"The Roll-Call" is the sequel to the Clayhanger trilogy. This book concerns the young life of Clayhanger's stepson, George. George Edwin Cannon (he quickly dropped the surname Clayhanger), is an architect, in many ways representing the ambitions held by his stepfather, Edwin. However, he possesses an arrogance endowed by family wealth and Bennett examines with some aplomb the difficulty of bringing up children without spoiling them. All four books were, for me, riveting, even with the long descriptions associated with the very talented writing of Arnold Bennett. All stories were fascinating and the characters believable. As other reviewers have mentioned, the narration of Simon Evers is impeccable: worthy of any professional and trained artist in my view. I even enjoyed the accompanying seagull cries which were in the background from time to time!

An excellent third book to its predecessors Clayhanger, and Hilda Lessway Simon Evers narrates all of the books in the series so one is assured of quality. The narration and stories are superb and I’m near the end of the grand finale These Twain.
Excellently written story and extremely well read by a professional.

The author is highly skilled at detailed descriptions, including those of the characters thoughts, reactions and emotions which makes him so exceptional for me. I enjoy his work immensely.

I should have paid more attention to how far I was into the story. I had no idea this rich tale was going to end so abruptly. It did not seem like a finished story to me.

I wanted to give it a higher rating because most of the story (and always Simon Evers) deserves one, but the ending was so disappointing! It seemed to have nothing to do with the rest of the book.

Any story by Bennett is usually entertaining simply because of his skill as a story teller. This one, however, has the most nebulous ending. Simon Evers always makes any story interesting.

Rather surprisingly I enjoyed this book. It was a bit rambling but very well read and something different. More a man's story perhaps.
