Lighthouse Stories is a captivating compendium of memories from Irish Lighthouse Keepers, exploring their experiences from stormy seas at Fastnet Rock to the breathtaking sights at Inishtrahull. The series features the writings of Lightkeeper poet DJ O’Sullivan and insights from Lightkeeper Gerald Butler about the workings of the paraffin light.
Each episode delves into different aspects of lighthouse life. In Episode 01, we re-live a Lightkeeper’s day through sound recordings by Chris Watson. Episode 02 recounts the perilous moments when Lighthouse Keepers faced tumultuous seas, including the destruction of the Lighthouse at Calf Rock in 1881. Episode 03 examines the imaginative influence of lighthouses, featuring a re-reading of Virginia Woolf's 'To The Lighthouse' by Melissa Murray.
In Episode 04, Ray and Eileen Wickham share their experiences of family life at various lighthouse stations, particularly at Hook Head. Finally, Episode 05 takes a deeper look at the poetry of DJ O'Sullivan, accompanied by his sons, Donal and Eugene O'Sullivan, who are also former Lighthouse Keepers.
