A perfect novel read perfectly. It’s given me immense pleasure. I read it many years ago and wondered why it had such an immense reputation. Returning to it, and listening to it being read with such quiet authority and passion, I now know. It’s a novel of extraordinary intimacy, a confessional that seems made to be read aloud - and to be, as it is here, an audiobook.

How anyone could find this boring is beyond me. The narrator draws us into a story of seemingly normal but dysfunctional characters. The ' choppy ' narrative technique works like flashbacks in a film, giving further information that wasn't initially evident. Definitely a masterpiece. I shall listen again. The reader has a lovely calm but expressive voice.

I’ve tried this novel a couple of times but found it so confusing and dreary at the beginning that I always gave up. I’m so glad I stuck with it this time as it is well worth it. Narration great too, thank you
