Sir Harry Hotspur’s only son and heir dies young which means that the title goes to a cousin, George Hotspur. Sir Harry wants the ancestral property to go to his daughter, Emily, and hopes that a future husband will adopt the family name.
George is a charmer but also a spendthrift and a gambler. He sets out to win Emily in order to save himself from bankruptcy – and succeeds, despite Emily knowing he is really unworthy. She is convinced she can save him but has also promised she will not marry without her father’s consent – which of course Sir Harry refuses to give.
The book follows their story. (Summary by Simon Evers)

If your so happy and just want to be depressed, this is the book for you. It even has a sad ending. It even has a weak and stupid woman who seems to think she can only love an idiot, gambling, selfish, jerk of a man. Mr. Evers does a great job in reading this pathetic book, which gives it the extra star.

Sir Harry's best efforts

The idea that a good woman can change a sinner into a half decent saint still, I expect, goes the rounds. I found Emily an irritating, sanctimonious self-made martyr full of her own importance. Trollope tries here again to find something good in his villains, but in vain as far as I can see. All the same it's a fascinating and original story, beautifully read, as usual, by Simon Evers

Enjoyable

All of Anthony Trollope's books are highly recommended. There is always a moral lesson and consequences if amoral behavior is pursued which is addressed here. As another listener says the end is not as one may like but it's still a good read. The narrator is exceptional and I plan on listening to every book he has vocalized. Narration at its finest!

I always like this author, and of course this is one of my favorite narrators, but this book kind of stinks. A very shallow story that doesn’t go very far, and has An satisfying ending.

Beautifully read.

Downer of an ending.

Trollope Tripe

By chapter 11 I knew how this unworthy effort by the esteemed author would end, and worse, did not care. Narrator Simon Evers deserves, as always, a positive rating.

Sir Harry Hotspur Of Humblewaite

Not the most uplifting book, but well written and well read.

The reader makes the story even better.
