Vera; or, The Nihilists is Oscar Wilde's first play, a melodramatic tragedy that unfolds against the backdrop of 19th-century Russia. The story is inspired by the real-life figure Vera Zasulich, a revolutionary whose actions challenge the oppressive regime of the time. As tensions rise, the characters navigate a world of political intrigue, personal sacrifice, and the quest for justice.

Set in a society on the brink of change, Wilde's work explores themes of nihilism, rebellion, and the moral dilemmas faced by those who dare to defy authority. The play's rich dialogue and complex characters reflect Wilde's sharp wit and keen observations on human nature, making it a distinctive entry in his body of work.

Though initially met with mixed reviews and rarely performed today, Vera offers a fascinating glimpse into Wilde's early exploration of dramatic themes and his engagement with the socio-political issues of his time. This production, narrated by LibriVox volunteers, brings to life a piece of theatrical history that invites reflection on the enduring struggle for freedom and the cost of conviction.
